Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Institute of Statistical Studies and Researches - Department of Statistics and Econometrics Summary: This study is aiming to choose the statistical distribution that "best" fits household expenditure (income) for each population subgroup (rural and urban) based on the Household Income, Expenditure and Consumption Survey (HIECS) data for 2010/ 2011 and 2012/ 2013. To achieve the goal of this study; Lognormal, Singh- Madalla, Dagum and Generalized beta type 2 distributions will be examined. These distributions will be tested using Maximum Likelihood, Bayes Information Criterion, and Akaike Information Criterion to select the one that "best" fits the data for rural and urban areas as well as for the aggregate level (i.e. Egypt as whole). We will also measure the degree of expenditure inequality once using the HIECS raw data, and another time using model fitted data for 2010/ 2011and 2012/ 2013. This study revealed important findings Generalized beta type 2 provides a better fit than Dagum, Singh-Madallah, and Log Normal distributions upon the AIC, BIC, log- likelihood criteria
