Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Clinical and Chemical Pathology Summary: Back ground: Hepatitis C virus is a viral pandemic and a leading cause of chronic liver disease, an estimated 130{u2013}170 million people have HCV infection worldwide, prevalence is highest in Egypt with more than 10% of the general population are infected. The model of the development of liver fibrosis is that it is the consequence of an inflammatory response to the virus. Cytokines are released by lymphocytes such as tumour necrosis factor Ü (TNFÜ) which in turn stimulate hepatic stellate cells as a key event in hepatic fibrogenesis. It was found that there is genetic risk for progression to hepatic fibrosis in chronic HCV patients. The study aimed to investigate the potential role of ABCB11 c.1331 T > C variants (rs2287622) on fibrosis staging in chronic HCV patients. Methods: One hundred and seventy seven Egyptian patients with chronic HCV were included, for whom fibroscan was performed to assess the degree of hepatic fibrosis. Genotyping of SNP in ABCB11 gene (rs2287622) was analyzed by Real-time PCR.Results: There no significant difference in the distribution of different genotypes in ABCB11 c.1331 T > C (CC and TC) between mild and advanced fibrosis in chronic HCV Egyptian patients
