Myocardial protection techniques are important during pediatric cardiac surgery as irreversible ischemic damage starts to occur in the normothermic human heart only 20 minutes after the ischemia. The main principle of the commonly used cardioplegia solution is producing pharmacological arrest of the myocardium in diastole to minimize energy production and reduce the effects of ischemic damage on the myocardium This study was conducted to compare the efficacy of single dose HTK cardioplegic solution for myocardial protection to conventional multiple dose blood cardioplegia in pediatric patients undergoing open total corrective surgery for congenital heart disease. Perioperative measurement of serum Troponin I level, total postoperative inotropic support and total ICU stay were compared in both groups
