Voriconazole is a novel broad-spectrum antifungal agent that shows excellent in vitro activity against a wide variety of yeasts and molds. Voriconazole has been approved for use by the FDA for treatment of serious infections with those filamentous fungi and resistant candida species. No voriconazole eye drops solution is commercially available although several authors have reported on the potential of voriconazole for use for topical ophthalmic administration, none of them focused on the preparation, stability or the storage of voriconazole. The bioavailability of conventional ophthalmic solutions is very poor due to efficient protective mechanisms of the eye, blinking, reflex lachrymation and drainage which remove rapidly various foreign substances including drug from the surface of the eye. Frequent instillation of drug solution is necessary to maintain a therapeutic drug level in the tear or at the site of action but the frequent use of highly concentrated solution may induce toxic side effects due to systemic absorption of drug through nasolachrymal drainage. In recent years there has been significant efforts directed towards the development of new systems for ophthalmic drug delivery. A more desirable dosage form would be one that can deliver drug in a solution form, create little to no problem of vision and need be dosed no more frequently than once or twice daily. In situ gel forming systems are those which are when exposed to physiological conditions will shift to a gel phase
