Periodontitis is one of the most common diseases in Egypt more than 4000 years ago. No age group, ethnicity, gender or socio economic group is immune to it. According to the world oral health report, oral diseases is classified as major public health problems owing to their high prevalence and incidence all over the world. Severe periodontitis, which may result in tooth loss, is found in 5-15% of most populations. Periodontal diseases are more common in developing countries, due to oral health services is limited. Although bacterial resistance and adverse side effects of using systemic antibiotics, large doses of systemic antibiotics must be taken in periodontitis treatment to achieve sufficient concentrations in the gingival crevicular fluid of the periodontal pockets. Absence of topical antimicrobial periodontitis preparations in the Egyptian market makes systemic antibiotics the only available way for antibiotic treatment when needed. The aim of this study is to design and develop adequate antimicrobial preparations of tinidazole (TZ) for topical buccal application in periodontitis. Mucoadhesive lipid based drug delivery systems (LBDDS) e.g. (ethosomes, self microemulsion, and liquid crystals), mucoadhesive conventional gels and LBDDS based gels were developed and evaluated for their physical characters, invitro drug release
