Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Ophthalmology Summary: The aim is to study the role of multifocal Electroretinogram (mfERG) in the evaluation of macular function in patients with diabetic clinically significant macular edema (CSME) and correlate the mfERG measurement with central foveal thickness (CFT) as measured by Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) to elucidate the possible value of mfERG in management of diabetic maculopathy. Ninety eyes were included in this cross-sectional observational study. Thirty eyes belonged to normal healthy subjects without ophthalmic or systemic abnormalities served as a control group. Sixty eyes belonged to diabetic patients with diabetic macular edema (DME). All subjects were subjected to complete ophthalmic examination, including a review of medical and family history, visual acuity testing by Snellen fraction, and slit-lamp biomicroscopy of anterior and posterior segment. Retinal imaging using FFA and SD-OCT was done to all patients to obtain the CFT, confirm the clinical diagnosis and detect exclusion criteria e.g. ischemic maculopathy. Afterwards, all included eyes were examined using the mfERG using standard protocols to determine the P1 wave amplitude and implicit time from the foveal region
