Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Summary: TMJ with internal derangement is one of the common intra-articular disorders. The disorder has been associated with characteristic clinical findings such as pain, joint sounds and irregular or deviating jaw function. The objective was to assess the efficacy and safety of hyalureonic acid for internal derangement of TMJ by means of systematic review and meta-analysis on relevant randomized controlled trials. Materials and Methods:We carried out a computerized research in the following databases: PubMed; Cochrane , Embase, MEDLINE, Alt-Health Watch, Health Source: Consumer Edition, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, CINAH, Electronic Journal Center . Complete list of search strategies and databases reviewed is available from the authors on request. The Cochrane Collaboration{u2019}s statistical guidelines were followed. Review Manager (RevMan) software was used for data processing .Meta-analyses were conducted only if there were studies of similar comparisons reporting the same outcome measures. Results: The initial list of articles comprised 32 possible studies. After applying the inclusion criteria, we obtained 4randomized controlled clinical trials, 3 of which were double-blind and 1 Multi-centric blind.According to forest plot of comparison and meta-analysis, we have two outcomes: Mouth opening and Pain. Concerning mouth opening as primary outcome , no significant differences between studies concerning mouth opening. Concerning the pain as secondary outcome, It shows Preference to hyaluronic acid. Conclusion: After analyzing the literature, it was found that intra-articular arthrocentesis plus sodium hyaluronate seems to be an effective method for treating internal derangements of the TMJ. However, further randomized controlled clinical trials, with representative samples and longer follow-up time must be carried out in order to assess the real effectiveness of this technique
