Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pathology
Galectin-3 is a 29-35 KDa chimaera-type galectin, which is normally expressed in various cells and tissues, and shows pleiotropic biological functions in cell growth and apoptosis. It is closely involved in tumor cell proliferation, transformation, migration, invasion and metastasis. The aim of this work is to evaluate the expression of galectin-3 in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and to correlate the expression of galectin-3 with available clinicopathological data. Forty total laryngectomy specimens; collected from the pathology department, Faculty of medicine, Cairo university. Two slides were prepared from each paraffin embedded tumor block, one slide for Hematoxylin and eosin staining and the other for immunohistochemically staining by galectin-3 monoclonal antibody. 34 cases (85%) showed positive Galectin-3 expression, and a statistically significant correlation was found between galectin-3 expression in normal, dysplastic epithelium / insitu component and the concomitant positive expression in the invasive malignant tumor tissue. However correlations between galectin-3 expression and available clinicopathological data were all non significant
