Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Family Medicine
Both depression and obesity are widely spread problems with major public health implication. According to the WHO the worldwide prevalence of obesity more than doubled between 1980 and 2014. In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 600 million were obese. Depression is also a major public health problem globally and will rank the second of the disease burden by 2030. Our goal in this study is to upgrade the health status of obese females by reducing their co-morbid condition and psychological health problems as depression using weight reduction intervention program. The current study was done on 2 phases. Phase one was a case control study aiming to assess the psychopathology in females who were seeking obesity treatment. Second phase was a longitudinal intervention study to reassess group of the cases who lost 5-10% of their original weight. It took place in National Nutritional Institute NNI for obesity clinic including 150 overweight and obese women (case group) and 150 average weight women (control grou). The results were divided to three parts. Part one- in which comparison between cases and control was done. Part two- in which we assess the psychological condition using BDI version 1996
