Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - National Cancer Institute - Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Relief
Dexmedetomidine is a potent and highly selective Ü-2 adrenoceptor agonist with sympatholytic, sedative, amnestic, and analgesic properties which has been described as a useful and safe adjunct in many clinical applications Uses of Dexmedetomidine are continuously expanding; this gave us the motive to introduce it in one of the outpatient fields which is the interventional radiological procedures. It provides unique 2conscious sedation3 We observed an acceptable reduction (11% for blood pressure and 10% for heart rate) after the loading dose of dexmedetomidine as compared to the pre sedation values. In 61% of the cases in our study, adequate pain relief could be achieved only with supplemental fentanyl. The diversity of interventional radiological procedures presented in our study reflected the variance of how is it convenient to use dexmedetomidine in these procedures. However, it still provides an alternative for anesthetists that has no deleterious effects on respiration especially in the procedures where dexmedetomidine gave proof to its efficacy in both sedation and analgesia
