Fine structure energy levels, wavelengths, transition probabilities, oscillator strengths and lifetimes are calculated using cowan atomic structure code with relativistic corrections for Cu-like ions with Z=42 to 56. Calculated values shows a good agreement with experimental results. Collisional excitation rate coefficients are calculated using the analytical formulas of vriens and smeets. Level population densities are calculated by solving the coupled rate equations and gain coefficients for these ions are calculated at three selected electron temperatures namely 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of the ionization energy. The promising laser lines are in soft x-ray and XUV region of spectra with wavelengths between 91 Å and 531 Å. The values of maximum gain coefficients increase with atomic number and their order of magnitude ranges from10⁻² cm⁻¹ to 10⁴ cm⁻¹
