Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Summary: The transition of a normal cell to a tumor cell involves large number of genetic changes and cell cycle instability. Additionally, the wide pharmacological activity of xanthine nucleus and its contribution to the controlling mechanisms in cell cycle, there is an increasing demand to the synthesis of new xanthine derivatives which have a potential for antitumor activity. Accordingly, the present work aims to design and synthesize derivatives of xanthine with anticipating antitumor activity. Twenty eight of the newly synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro antitumor activity. Furthermore, because the historical activity of many xanthine derivatives as bronchodilators, twenty two of the synthesized compounds were evaluated for their bronchodilator activity in order to obtain additional benefit for bronchospasm and hypoxia associated with the cancer especially lung cancer patients
