Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Chemical Engineering Summary: This research aims to develop an efficient method that is capable of utilizing both of CaCl₂ waste solution generated by Solvay process and CO₂ gas in the production of nano-precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and ammonium chloride. Through this work, CO₂ gas has been bubbled through a gas distributer into a synthetic solution of CaCl₂ at high pH. During this study, intensive experimental work was performed in order to study the effect of several parameters (the effect of the CO₂ flow rate, stirring rate, amount of ammonia, addition of a suitable additive, and the ultrasonic waves) on the particle size produced. Then a synthetic solution for solvay wastewater was prepared and carbonated at the optimum conditions. The experimental results showed that, mechanical stirring has the effect to decrease the particle size almost to the same value obtained in case of using ultrasonic waves at high frequency, while at low frequency the stirring rate was superior to ultrasonic waves in decreasing the particle size. Also, using a suitable additive like glycerol decreased the particle size to a large extent
