Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Prosthodontics Summary: Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate effect of different denture base materials (conventional heat cured acrylic resin and thermoplastic injectable acrylic resin (bre-crystal) on the masticatory muscle activity in the cases of maxillary single dentures wearers. Materials and methods: The sample of this study consisted of twenty patients; all patients were free from any oral or systemic diseases and had a fully edentulous maxillary ridge and completely dentulous mandibular ridge and divided into two groups after examination: Group 1: Ten patients were received conventional heat cured acrylic resin denture base. Group 2: Ten patients were received thermoplastic resin denture base. Muscle activities of Masseter and Temporalis muscles were recorded during chewing soft and hard food as following: immediately after one month, three, six, nine months and one year after delivery of the maxillary single denture. Results: The highest mean differences were recorded for conventional heat cured acrylic resin denture base while the lowest mean differences were recorded for the thermoplastic resin denture base with highly statistically significant difference when compared between both groups. Conclusion: thermoplastic acrylic resin denture base may provide better masticatory efficiency with less muscles activities (i.e. less effort of the masticatory muscles) rather than conventional heat cured acrylic resin denture base
