Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Internal Medicine Summary: Introduction: Anemia in older adults is multifactorial, affects approximately 10% of community-dwelling adults over 65 years of age and 20% of those over 85 years of age in developed countries. Low hemoglobin has been associated with an increased risk of hospitalization and death, decreased skeletal muscle strength, decreased mobilityand cognitive decline. Aims: The aim of this work is to assess interleukin-6 and hepcidin in old aged patient with ACD and its role in development of the anemia (in order to give the proper care). Patients and Methods: Study includes 80 subjects classified into 2 groups: Group I: includes 40 cases clinically and laboratory having chronic disease. Group 2: includes 40 healthy age and gender matched subjects as a control group. Full data of the subjects was taken. Laboratory investigations that performed include: CBC, liver and kidney function tests, measuring hepcidin and interlukin-6 ELISA. Results: the mean concentration of both hepcidin and IL-6 of the cases were higher than that of controls and this difference was highly statistically significant. Conclusion: Data from this study demonstrate the importance of considering iron profiles in improving our understanding of the changes of the hepcidin and IL-6 concentration with ACD
