Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Neuropsychiatry Summary: Objectives: To detect differences between female borderline personality disorder with and without substance dependence as regards phenomenology, impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, childhood trauma and dissociation in both groups and to assess substance dependence severity in addictive group. Methods: 40 female borderline personality disorder patients were compared to 40 female borderline personality disorder with substance dependence attending to outpatient clinic in Kasr Alainy hospital and Kasr Elmaadi private hospital using borderline personality disorder severity index, barratt Impulsiveness scale, difficulties in emotional regulation scale, childhood traumatic questionnaire, dissociative experience scale and addiction severity Index. Results: Divorce rate was higher in borderline personality disorder with substance dependence group than borderline personality disorder group. Borderline personality disorder with substance dependence patients were more impulsive, less paranoid than borderline personality disorder patients. Borderline personality disorder patients had more emotional dysregulation, childhood trauma and dissociative experiences than borderline personality disorder with substance dependence patients. There was statistical significant correlation between childhood trauma and dissociative experiences in borderline personality disorder patients while there was no statistical significant correlation between childhood trauma and dissociative experiences apart from sexual abuse in borderline personality disorder with substance dependence patients. The most prevalent primary substance of dependence was heroin, followed by tramadol and there were severe problems on drug abuse scale and social scale of addiction severity Index
