Disturbance of the equilibrium between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and anti-oxdants has been implicated in various diseases, including atherosclerosis; the most common pathologic process underlying acute myocardilal infarction (AMI). Thu, the dednse systems against Ros are critical for protecting blood vessel walls against oxidative damage. The managanese superoxide dismutase(MnSOD) antioxdants enzyme affords the major defense against ROS within the Mitochondria, which is considered the main ROS production locus in aerobes.
