Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Background : Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a risk for the health of both the pregnant women and her infant .Its unfavourable effects start in utero and continue after birth .It is known that GDM increases oxidative stress and decreases antioxidant enzyme activities .In this study we aimed to investigate cord blood mean platelet volume (MPV) and ischemia {u2013}modified albumin (IMA) levels of infants of diabetic mothers (IDM) .Methods: 80 infants of pregnant women between 37 and 41 weeks gestational diabetes fulfilling inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study . Postpartum 1st minute and 5th minute APGAR scores were recorded .Weight ,length and head circumference of babies were measured by the same standard tape immediately after birth .Five milliliters of umbilical venous blood were obtained to study MPV and IMA levels .Results: There were statistical significance in levels of MPV ( p {u2264} 0.001 ) and IMA (p=0.001 ) between groups . IMA and MPV variables were able to predict outcomes. The optimum cut-off value of IMA according to the maximum Youden index was more than 0.65 for predicting outcomes. This cut-off value had a sensitivity of 70% and specificity of 90%%; area under the curve was 0.758 (95% CI 0.5-0.91), p value 0.005. While, a cut off value of MPV to predict outcomes was 9.95 resulting in sensitivity of 75% and specificity of 85%%; area under the curve was 0.89 (95% CI 0.7-0.98), p value < 0.001
