Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences - Department of Laser Applications in Oral Surgery, Dentistry Summary: There are many problems with clinical application of ceramic brackets as the high incidence of enamel damage during debonding and low fracture toughness of ceramics that may cause partial or complete bracket fracture during removal, so in an attempt to solve these problems our study was performed on a sample of sixty freshly extracted human maxillary premolars. The object of this study was to evaluate surface topography and assessment of the enamel composition after debonding of orthodontics brackets by Erbium,chromium: yttrium,scandium,gallium,garnetlaser at a wavelength of 2780 nm and compare it to the conventional method. Ceramic maxillary premolar brackets were used. The teeth were randomly assigned to two groups. Group A: debonding of ceramic brackets by conventional plier and Group B: debonding of ceramic brackets by Er, Cr: YSGG laser. For evaluation of possible changes in the enamel surface and its content, enamel surface was carefully examined three times, first at the beginning before surface treatment, second after etching and finally after debonding with contact stylus profilometer, laser Induced fluorescence and scanning electron Microscope attached with energy dispersive x-ray analyses. Adhesive remnant Index was used to quantify the amount of remaining adhesive once the brackets were debonded. There was no statistical significant difference between conventional and laser groups before etching and after etching, while after debonding, the conventional group showed statistically significantly higher values than the laser group. The present study showed that laser has the potential to replace the conventional method for debonding ceramic brackets. Descriptive statistics were calculated for each group. Comparisons for the different debonding types were performed with two-way analysis of variance
