Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Institute of African Research and Studies - Department of Natural Resources
Eastern nile basin (ENB) consists of 4 major sub-basins: Blue nile, baro akobo sobat, tekeze atbara setit, and main nile. At the high Aswan dam (HAD), eastern nile (EN) water flow contributes about 85% of the total Nile flow. ENB is a very rich area in the potentiality of large-scale water infrastructure development projects, such as hydropower, and irrigated agriculture, especially in Ethiopia and South Sudan regions. The impacts of these projects on the downstream countries need more detailed investigations to solve conflicts between the upstream and downstream countries. This thesis assessed the impacts of the proposed water resources development projects of the ENB on the HAD, in terms of inflows and pool elevations which have direct impact on hydropower production potentiality. To do this, two models were configured and coupled (hydrological model and reservoir simulation model) to simulate the system hydrology and the water balance in the basin, then analyzing the impact of these projects on HAD. ENB hydrology is simulated using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (ArcSWAT) model and runoff was generated at sub-catchments scale based on the most appropriate global rainfall dataset for ENB after disaggregation GPCC
