Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmaceutics Summary: Scabies is a contagious disease of humans and other mammals. It is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows in the lower stratum corneum of the skin. Treatment is with permethrin which is applied to clean, cool, dry skin over the entire body and left on for 8 to 24 hours depending upon the preparation. The preparation should be applied after washing. In addition to treatment with an acaricide, symptomatic treatment of the itching with crotamiton, calamine lotion, or systemic antihistaminics or corticosteroids may be required. Permethrin is a non-systemic pyrethroid insecticide with some repellent effects. Permethrin is available in the following strengths: Topical lotion and cream 5%, and topical gel 2%. Topical spray 0.25 and 0.5% (As insect repellant, applied on clothes), topical lotion 1% and shampoo 1% (for head lice). Niosomes are vesicles whose envelopes are made up of nonionic surfactants. Niosomes, as drug carriers, are associated with problems related to physical stability such as fusion, aggregation, sedimentation and leakage on storage. The proniosome approach minimizes these problems as it is a dry and free flowing product which allows for ease of transfer, distribution, measuring and storage, thus making it a versatile delivery system
