Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Internal Medicine Summary: Transfusion-induced iron overload is a major health threaten in patients with transfusion dependant anaemia. The main aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between the level of iron stored in the liver measured by MRI T2 * with ferritin levels and transferrin saturation in these patients. This study was done on 40 patients with Ý-thalassemia major or mylodysplastic syndrome aged 81 to 56 years. Clinical, laboratory and radiological findings of the patients compared with estimated hepatic iron T2*. The mean ± SD relaxation times in liver was 9.36±4.14 msec. The mean ± SD serum ferritin level was 3254.80±2835.37ng/mL. The mean ± SD transferrin saturation was 76.10±21.31%. there was statistically significant difference regarding Estimated hepatic T2* value, among different groups of liver diameter (P<0.05), the negative correlation found between serum ferritin levels and liver MRI T2* and the positive correlation found between transferrin saturation and liver MRI T2* was not of statistical significance (P>0.05). In conclusion Since there was no statistical significant correlation between serum ferritin levels and liver iron levels, accurate estimation of hepatic iron load using MRI T2* is necessary in patients with transfusion dependant anaemia to assess body iron load and adjust iron chelation therapy
