Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Cardiology Summary: Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease is a serious health risk. The incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD) is occurring much more frequently. The risk stratification of patients with coronary artery disease, particularly progression to death and acute heart failure, has been the subject of research in recent years, several biomarkers have been identified over the years, and the search for new ones with better and more accurate profiles has been very intense. Objective: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the usefulness of cystatin C as a prognostic biomarker for risk stratification of patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and normal renal function who received reperfusion therapy. Subjects and methods: 90 consecutive patients with STEMI who received reperfusion therapy (by streptokinase)within 12 hours from onset of chest pain were enrolled in the study,a blood sample was taken within 4-6 hours of admission and serum extracted and stored at -70C degree then serum cystatin C level was done using N latex cystatin C reagents (siemens), patients were followed during hospital stay for MACE (post MI angina, significant arrhythmia, new onset heart failureand in-hospital cardiac mortality), severity of CAD was determined by GENSINI score during coronary angiography
