Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Neurosurgery
Tumors of cauda equina are rare group of tumors with varying histological features and clinical symptoms. Symptoms are usually unspecific, mimicking degenerative lumbar spine syndromes. Tumors of cauda equina carry a favorable prognosis as most of these tumors are benign. They are mostly surgically curable and radiotherapy is not usually necessary. This study includes twenty-five adult patients with primary tumors in the cauda equina region operated upon in the Neurosurgery Department at Cairo University Hospitals. The goals of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome and the extent of resection in a group of patients operated upon for resection of tumors of cauda equina. Gross total resection was achieved in 84% and excellent outcome was achieved in 76% . Optimal clinical results after surgery depends on good neurological condition before the operation and a gross total resection of the tumor
