This work is concerned with evaluating the possibility of using nuclear matrix proteins (NMP) as biomarker of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). A total of 120 CHC-patients and 33 healthy individuals were included in this study. The target NMP was identified based on SDS-PAGE followed by Western-blot. A single immunoreactive band was identified at 52-kDa corresponding to NMP. The concentration of NMP-52 was found to increase significantly (P<0.05) with the progression of liver fibrosis. Thus, the detection of NMP in different stages of liver fibrosis can serve as a good diagnostic marker. The difference of its levels might be helpful in differential diagnosis of CHC-patients with different fibrotic liver stages
