Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Architectural Engineering Summary: This research discusses the deficiency of open spaces, especially in congested cities of developing countries. Therefore, the in-between spaces are discussed as an alternative to address this deficiency. Also, the research discusses the 2appropriation3 as phenomenon in in-between spaces to fulfill people{u2019}s needs. Then, an approach is followed to understand and analyze these spaces through physical and usage qualities. The research gives general overview of open spaces in downtown Cairo focusing on in-between spaces. Physical and usage qualities are discussed on spaces such as set-backs, courtyards and pocket in selected area of downtown area to reach conclusions and recommendations for dealing with these spaces while developing them
