Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Zoology Summary: Breast cancer is a global urgent public health problem, and particularly in Egypt as it is the most common female malignancy. Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) represents the most aggressive form of breast cancer, characterized by rapid progression, involvement of dermal lymphatic emboli and extensive lymph node involvement. Syndecan-1 plays a crucial role in breast cancer development and is thought to be involved in extracellular matrix remodeling, tumor invasion and metastasis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression of Syndecan-1 in non-IBC versus IBC patients, lymphangeogenesis was also assessed and the correlation between syndecan-1 expression and lymphangeogensis was investigated. A total of 20 female patients diagnosed with IBC and 20 females patients diagnosed with non-IBC from Ain Shams university hospitals (Cairo, Egypt) were enrolled in the present study. The expression of syndecan-1 was assessed at the gene and protein levels using semi-quantitative PCR and immunohistochemistry respectively. The results showed that syndecan-1 expression was higher in IBC than non-IBC patients (P{u2264}0.001). lymphangeogenesis was also measured using counting method and the results revealed a significant increase in lymphangeogensis in IBC compared to non-IBC (P{u2264}0.005). Moreover the results revealed a positive correlation (r=0.890) between syndecan-1 expression and lymphangeogensis in IBC patients (P{u2264}0.005). We can conclude that over expression of Syndecan-1 is associated with aggressiveness of breast cancer. To our knowledge this study is the first one to identify correlation between syndecan-1 expression and lymphangeogenesis which needs to be validated by expanding the study
