Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Nursing - Department of Surgical Nursing Summary: Back ground: Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) has become the accepted first line treatment modality for renal and upper ureteric calculi. The selection of suitable candidates can optimize the outcome of ESWL. Aim: Is to examine predictors of outcome for ESWL among patients with renal calculi and to suggest nursing guidelines to prevent potential complications. Research design: A descriptive predictive research design was utilized in the current study. Sample: A convenient sample consisting of 100 male and female adults. Setting: ESWL unit in one of the Urology and Nephrology Hospital, Cairo - Egypt. Tool of data collection: (1) Personal and Medical Background Information Form, (2) Modified Numeric Pain Rating Scale, and (3) ESWL Predictors of Outcome Assessment Tool. Results: Sample age ranged from 20 to 60 years with a mean of 41.9 ± 10.32. The majority of studied subjects were males as well married (86% and 85%, respectively). Half of the subjects had right renal calculi (50%), the majority had single calculi (76%). Size of the calculi ranged between 7 to 20 mm, with a mean of 12.28 ± 3.5. Concerning final treatment outcome, more than one third of the studied subjects had treatment success (36%). Major complications in the form of steinstrass and UTI were developed in (4% and 3%, respectively). Conclusion: The study concluded that calculi size was the only predictor of outcome for ESWL after one session. Recommendation: Application of suggested nursing guidelines in order to enhance patient's outcome after ESWL session
