Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Neuropsychiatry
Background : Physical health problems especially metabolic and cardiovascular co-morbidity are recognized as being increasingly important in patients with severe mental illness. Screening rates of metabolic syndrome in routine clinical practice in psychiatry is suboptimal. Aim: In the current study we aimed at detecting the presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among hospitalized psychiatric patients upon their discharge, exploring psychiatric factors contributing to the presence of MetS. And audit screening for metabolic syndrome during hospitalization and the management of metabolic syndrome criteria in detected cases during admission. Subjects and methods: The study included all patients discharged from the free inpatient departments of psychiatry and addiction hospital of Kasr El-Aini faculty of medicine, Cairo University, during the period from 1st of August 2016 till 30th of November 2016 (112 patients). Using a structured form designed by the researcher, patients were assessed for possible risk factors for MetS. Then MetS parameters were measured (waist circumference, body mass index, blood pressure, Triglycerides, HDL cholesterol and Fasting blood sugar). After that, audit for metabolic syndrome detection and documentation and measures taken for detected cases was done through review of medical records
