Thesis (M.A.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Arts - Department of English
This interdisciplinary study will compare the neoliberal globalism doctrine to its presentation in four counter-narratives that are selected for this research. The novels chosen for this research are Feed by M.T. Anderson, Jennifer Government by Max Barry, Miss New India by Bharati Mukherjee and Zaat by Sonallah Ibrahim. Despite their diversity, the novels are similar in their critique of neoliberal economic globalization. Neoliberalism is an umbrella term that includes a number of concepts, which have become a vital part of our everyday life, but only three specific neoliberal features are chosen for this study; these concepts are privatization, individualism, and consumerism. In short, this study aims to explore the discourse that defies the neoliberal global hegemony, and compare it to the theory itself in order to understand the reason behind the criticism of the four narratives. The impact of neoliberal economic globalization, particularly the three mentioned aspects, is going to be traced in this thesis through the analysis of the lives of the characters in the novels. Since the term 2neoliberal globalization3 is used in different disciplines; mainly economics and political science, this study will integrate different fields of study with literature
