Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Architectural Engineering Summary: In this critical era the world is going through, going green has become a necessity. Literature has discussed themes and techniques concerning building new green buildings that can save resources, especially energy, and provide a healthy and clean environment for the coming generations. However, much fewer studies have been conducted on systemizing the application of this concept on existing buildings. This study is intended to put a comprehensive framework for green retrofitting in residential buildings, which is the major building type, through establishing a means of assessing existing buildings and comparing them. By doing so, it is made possible to choose which buildings to retrofit and gather information on a large scale about the retrofitability of existing buildings. The study also suggests ways to integrate this approach in the decision-making process in order to maximize its benefits
