Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Zoology Summary: The present study highlighted the promising therapeutic role of the Myrrh extract against the proliferation of 3 cell lines; Hep-G2, MCF7 and HCT-116 cells after both 24 hours and 48 hours of incubation in both media with serum 10%, 5%, and in media without serum in vitro as well as in experimental models. The present results showed that the Myrrh exhibited significant inhibiting cell proliferation effects on the all three cell lines with different concentrations of Myrrh in vitro. In vivo, the present results showed that tumor size was significantly reduced in all treated subgroups (compared to the control group) by Myrrh dose 50 mg/k/day and100 mg/k/day. This reduction was increased with time, even up to fifth week. Histological investigation of tumor tissue in case of intraperitoneal injection of the extract (100 mg/k/day and 50mg/k/day of the Myrrh) showed part of the necrosis area index about 80% and few viable tumor cells, and in drinking water and intratumor treated method the viable tumor cells were decreased than control in dose 50mg/k/day with no viable tumor cells and no tumor necrosis in dose 100mg/k/day. These effects were achieved through the powerful anti-inflammatory effects of Myrrh extract. These results gave a hope that Myrrh eventually could be used for cancer chemoprevention and treatment in the future
