Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Periodontology Summary: Objective:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of systemic administration of green tea in conjunction with scaling and root planing versus scaling and root planing alone on the GCF total antioxidative capacity and clinical parameters in patients with generalized moderate chronic periodontitis. Materials and methods:Twenty eight patients were participated in this study and randomly allocated into two groups Group I (Test group): patients in this group received scaling and root planing supplemented with green tea tablets (300mg)* to be taken once daily for 3 months.Group II (Control group): patients in this group received the same treatment labeling but with no pharmaceutical activity. as in group I together with placebo tablets identical to the real drug in physical form, sensory perception, packaging, and The following clinical parameters (Plaque index, Gingival index, Probing pocket depth and Clinical attachment level) as well as the level of TAC in the GCF were recorded and measured at baseline and 3 months post-treatment. Results:Both groups showed statistically significant improvement in all clinical parameters with no difference between them. Test group showed more statistically significant increase in TAC than do the control group. Conclusion:Both the test and control groups exhibited significant improvement in clinical parameters and significant increase in GCF levels of TAC 3 months after non- surgical periodontal therapy. The adjunctive systemic administration of green tea produced more significant increase in GCF levels of TAC compared to control group 3 months after non- surgical periodontal therapy
