Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Endodontics Summary: This clinical study was conducted to compare the degree of post-operative pain and analgesic intake after the use of two different irrigation needles: NaviTip 29-gauge 27 mm End-Vented Tip and NaviTip 31-gauge 27 mm with Double Side port Irrigator Tip in patients with irreversible pulpitis in mandibular posterior teeth after single-visit root canal treatment using Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) at 0, 4, 12, 24, 48 and 72-hrs and 7 days The study design was a blinded randomized clinical trial as study participants and assessor didn{u2019}t know which intervention has been received. Thirty-eight patients with vital mandibular posterior teeth received single-visit root canal treatment using ProTaper Universal rotary system for canal preparation, they were randomly divided into two groups (n=19) according to the type of needle used for irrigation either NaviTip 29-gauge 27 mm End-Vented Tip or NaviTip 31-gauge 27 mm with Double Sideport Irrigator Tip. Pain was assessed using the NRS pre-operatively and at 0, 4, 12, 24, 48 and 72-hrs and 7 days post-operatively. All demographic data, clinical and NRS scores obtained from patients were analyzed and the results showed similarity between both groups regarding age and gender distribution, tooth type, canal number and pre-operative pain. Both needles showed drop in pain until it disappeared, the End-vented needles showed an observable increase in pain levels at 4, 12, 24, 48-hrs while the Side-vented needles showed an observable increase in pain at 12, 24, 48-hrs. The End vented NaviTip needles showed higher pain level than the Side vented NaviTip needles at 4, 12, 24-hrs, with no difference in drug intake post-operatively between both groups
