Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Metallurgical Engineering
Steel with ultrafine structure offers excellent mechanical properties combination, so this research aims to produce ultrafine grained steel with simple composition through thermomechanical controlled processing. In this study, processing parameters of controlled forging are investigated for low carbon, with/without microalloying elements, steels. Forging processing parameters are controlled to produce adequate microstructure to each subsequent procedure. Two new techniques are designed to produce ultrafine grained structure. The first technique is controlled hot compression and subsequent reverse annealing. The second technique is processing of dual phase by conducting a proper heat treatment. Finally, the mechanical properties (tensile, hardness and impact toughness) of all produced steels from different stages are investigated and the optimized parameters for each technique are defined
