Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Oral Radiology and diagnosis Summary: Objectives: To evaluate the accuracy and reliability of cone beam computed tomography in the volumetric analysis of the extraction sockets. Materials and methods: 83 single rooted teeth extraction sockets in eleven dry human jaws were included in the study (36 maxillary and 47 mandibular sockets). Impressions for sockets were taken and their volumes were measured by the water displacement technique. CBCT scans were conducted using Planmeca 3D Mid CBCT machine for all the jaws and volumetric analysis was performed using the automatic segmentation technique in the dedicated software 2Romexis viewer3. The CBCT volumetric measurements were compared to their real ones. Results: A strong agreement was found between real and CBCT measurements regarding the mandibular sockets and moderate agreements were found regarding the maxillary sockets and the whole sample sockets (ICC=0.73, 0.56 and 0.69 respectively). There was a strong intra-observer agreement on the volumetric measurements of the maxillary, mandibular and whole sample sockets (ICC=0.83, 0.90 and 0.89 respectively). There was a strong inter-observer agreement on the volumetric measurements of the maxillary sockets and a very strong agreement on the mandibular sockets and the whole sample sockets (ICC=0.83, 0.94 and 0.92 respectively. There was an overall underestimation in the CBCT volumetric measurements Conclusions: CBCT using the automatic segmentation technique proved strong reliability in the volumetric assessment of mandibular teeth extraction sockets; however it was not reliable in the volumetric assessment of maxillary teeth extraction sockets. The lack of the manual refinement tools in the automatic segmentation protocol of the dedicated software used in the study adversely affected the CBCT volumetric measurements
