Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Periodontology Summary: Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of systemic administration of green tea in conjunction with scaling and root planing versus scaling and root planing alone on the GCF total oxidative capacity and clinical parameters in patients with generalized moderate chronic periodontitis. Materials and methods: Twenty eight patients were participated in this study and randomly allocated into two groups: Group I (Test group): included 14 patients (9 females, 5 males with mean age 40 years) received scaling and root planing Then patients were given systemic green tea tablets (300 mg) to be taken once daily for 3 months. Group II (Control group): included 14 patients (7 females, 7 males with mean age 38 years) received the same treatment as in group I together with systemic placebo tablets to be taken once daily for 3 months. No side effects were reported after green tea administration. The clinical parameters (PI, GI, PD and CAL) and TOC were recorded at baseline and 3 months after treatment. Results: Both groups showed statistically significant improvement in all clinical parameters with no difference between them.Test group showed more statistically significant reduction in TOC than the control group. Conclusion: Both the test and control groups exhibited significant improvement in clinical parameters and significant reduction in GCF levels of TOC 3 months after non- surgical periodontal therapy. The adjunctive systemic administration of green tea produced more significant reduction in GCF levels of TOC compared to control group 3 months after non- surgical periodontal therapy
