Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Background: The circulating levels of IL-23 and its functional consequence in asthmatic children are still lacking. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to evaluate serum IL-23 levels in children with asthma compared with healthy controls and to correlate them to clinical severity of bronchial asthma and to pulmonary function tests. Methods: Forty five asthmatic children and forty five healthy children were evaluated from March, 2014 to March, 2015. Pulmonary functions were performed in all asthmatic children and blood eosinphils, total serum IgE and serum IL-23 were performed in all asthmatic and healthy children. Results: Total serum IgE, blood eosinophils and serum IL-23 levels were higher in asthmatic than in healthy children. IL-23 had an inverse correlation with PFT with no significant relation with severity of asthma. Conclusions: IL-23 can be used as a suitable biomarker for the inflammation of the airways in asthmatic children
