Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pathology
Purpose: Evaluation of survivin immunohistochemical expression in lymphoma and reactive follicular hyperplasia (R.F.H.) and correlation of survivin expression with various clinical and pathological parameters. Material and methods: Immunohistochemical staining for survivin was performed on paraffin-embedded sections of 40 lymphoid lesion cases, including 29 lymphoma cases and 11 R.F.H. cases. They were retrieved from the archives of pathology department, Kasr Alainy, Faculty of medicine, Cairo university and some private laboratories in the period from January 2016 through October 2017. Results: Twenty six cases (89.7%) of lymphoma cases showed positive survivin expression while in reactive follicular hyperplasia cases, the lymph nodes showed survivin expression only in follicular germinal center cells of 5 (45.5%) lymph nodes with negative staining of the mantle and marginal zone cells. Survivin expression was significantly correlated among lymphoma cases compared with R.F.H. cases (P<0.05). Expression of survivin protein in Hodgkin{u2019}s lymphoma (H.L.) showed 100% positivity and positive expression of survivin was detected in almost all of Reed-Sternberg cells (R-S cells), while non-tumour cells were negative. Survivin immunohistochemical expression was significantly correlated with the size of the lymph nodes among lymphoma cases and the presence of generalized lymphadenopathy in the study group. There were no statistically significant relationships between survivin expression and the following parameters: Age, gender, site and histological subtypes of lymphoma
