Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Urology
Open radical cystectomy (ORC) with different techniques of urinary diversion remains the gold standard procedure for treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (Mark & Khoury, 2012). However (ORC) is a morbid procedure with a significant rate of postoperative complications (Liedberg, 2010). In order to reduce perioperative complication rates while preserving good oncological and functional outcomes, efforts have been taken to apply minimally invasive surgical techniques such LRC to this evolving field of oncologic surgery. After the first LRC performed by Parra in 1992, many refinements of the instruments and surgical approach have been associated with an increased application of laparoscopy in the therapy of MIBC. It is our belief that LRC can be a valuable tool for institutions lacking the means to set up a robotic program due to financial and economic reasons like our homeland. LRC can be a step midway between ORC and the full RARC, offering a reasonable minimally invasive option at reasonable costs compared to RARC
