Water soluble polyester coatings were prepared from wastes of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and wood sawdust. For PET waste, the first step was the de-polymerization of PET by 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol with different molar ratios in the presence of different concentrations of zinc acetate as trans-esterification catalyst. The de-polymerised product was characterised by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the determination of hydroxyl value. The polyesters were successfully synthesized by the esterification of the glycolysed product with adipic acid, isophthalic acid, 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol and trimellitic anhydride. FTIR and ¹H-NMR were used to elucidate the structure of the prepared polyesters. Hydroxyl number and the physical properties of the prepared polyesters were also investigated. Another waste (wood sawdust) was liquified. The first step in the liquefaction of sawdust wastes was the use of different types of glycols; diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol as solvents and p-toluenesulfonic acid as the catalyst to produce bio-polyols, which were used to synthesize water soluble polyester resins
