Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Orthopedic Surgery Summary: Background: Fractures of the scapula occur mainly from direct trauma involving considerable violence and associated injuries of the shoulder and thorax are common. In most cases early functional treatment gives good or excellent results. Operative treatment may, however, be indicated, especially with displaced intra-articular fractures, fractures of the glenoid rim associated with humeral head subluxation, or unstable fractures of the scapular neck (1) Scapular fractures provide the trauma surgeon with a reliable clinical clue that the patient is at inordinate risk to have associated injuries of major consequence to the ipsilateral lung and chest wall, the ipsilateral shoulder girdle, and the ipsilateral subclavian, axillary, or brachial artery.(2) Patients and methods: This was a prospective case series involving 10 patients all are males (high energy trauma) with displaced fracture scapula treated with judet approach using 3.5 recon plates OR screws. Their mean age was: 35.9 years. Fractures are classified: Glenoid fractures (Iderberg classification) and scapular body fracture. The mean follow up period was: 20.90 weeks Patients were assesed clinically using DASH SCORE (35) and radiologically. Results: At time of final follow up no hardware failure or fracture displacement were recorded. 70% of patients fractures united and 30% of patients fractures showed delayed union but with good range of movement
