Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Internal Medicine Summary: The term diabetes mellitus describes several diseases of abnormal carbohydrate metabolism that are characterized by hyperglycemia. It is associated with a relative or absolute impairment in insulin secretion along with varying degrees of peripheral resistance to the action of insulin. (American diabetes association, 2014). Type II diabetes is by far the most common type of diabetes in adults (>90 percent) (American association of Diabetes, 2014). Diabetes is associated with complications such as cardiovascular diseases, retinopathy and neuropathy which can lead to chronic morbidities and mortality (Zucchi et al., 2005).Increased level of oxidative stress markers like malondialdehyde (MDA) has been detected in diabetes associated with complications (Kaefer et al., 2012). Ischemia modified albumin (IMA) is an altered type of serum albumin that forms under conditions of oxidative stress. Increased IMA has been described as a marker of ischemia reperfusion injury and dysfunction of endothelial L-arginine/nitric oxide pathway (affecting NO levels) (Verma et al., 2014)
