Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Prosthodontics Summary: Prosthetic obturator is the primary method employed in rehabilitating larger maxillary defects. To improve stability and retention, osseo-integrated implants are used in association with different attachment systems. This in-vitro study was carried out to show the effect of locator and ball attachments on peri-implant stresses induced during loading of implant retained unilateral total maxillectomy obturator. A cast obtained from an impression of an edentulous patient with total hemi-maxillectomy to simulate the real situation. Three dummy implants, in conjunction with ball attachment were inserted within the acrylic model. The acrylic model was prepared to receive the strain gauges. The acrylic resin of the model around each implant was reduced using a long fissure bur into a box shaped area leaving only 1 mm thickness of acrylic resin all around each implant. Six gauges were attached to the buccal and mesial surface of each implant. They were bonded in the center of the cuboid shaped acrylic resin using a cyno-acrylate based adhesive. The strain gauge wires were embedded in a channel created near the base of the cast and covered by self-cured acrylic resin
