Subject(s): Online resources: Available additional physical forms:
  • Issued also as CD
Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Architectural Engineering Summary: "Smart Materials" will play important role in building technology developments; those materials which form part of a smart structural system, that has the capability to sense its environment, Smart architecture obviously is environmentally aware, not just in terms of protecting the environment because energy and material efficiency is always smart But there{u2019}s more to smart architecture than that. It is interactive; a smart building presents itself as an interface between its users and the surroundings. It mediates between the demands and desires of users and environment. In doing so it is behaving intelligently; it uses its sensors to build up a {u2018}memory{u2019} and to learn .so smart materials can perform like living systems. Recognizing that the relation between Materials Science and Architecture is obsolete, the study intent is to show how these two fields are intrinsically connected while growing ever more symbiotic as we progress into the future. The thesis provides an analytical study of the types of smart materials available, giving a new insight into innovative methods and techniques which will give a new inspiration for the architectural design, which the study will introduce "Smart Architecture"
