Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Summary: Cancers are large family of diseases that involve abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. They form a subset of neoplasms. A neoplasm or tumor is a group of cells that have undergone unregulated growth and will often form a mass or lump, but may be distributed diffusely. Cancer is the second cause of mortality after cardiac diseases in the world. It is continuing to act as a major problem of health in both developing and developed countries. Accordingly, the search for new anticancer agents is extremely desirable to improve survival rates and minimize toxicities and drug resistance. Many researchers reported the importance of pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine as an interesting bioactive scaffold implicated in the development of antitumor agents. Also, literature survey highlighted the apoptotic activity of certain pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines leading to their anticancer effect. Accordingly, this research focused on the synthesis of novel pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines hoping to obtain promising antitumor agents with fewer side effects. So, the present investigation deals with the synthesis of 2-thioxopyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine III, 2-hydrazinyl/phenylhydrazinyl pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-ones IVa,b, 2-(2-arylidinehydrazinyl) pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)ones Va-e, pyrido[2,3-d][1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]pyrimidin-5(1H)ones VIIa,b and IX-XIII, and pyrido[2,3-d][1,4]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine-3,5-diones VIIIa-g
