Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Background: Childhood obesity is one of the most complex and poorly understood clinical syndromes in pediatrics .Obesity in early childhood is on the increase, this makes it ofgreat concern as the majority of obesity in adulthood has its origin in childhood. Childhood obesity is substantially related with increased morbidity and mortality . The body adiposity may influence the maturation status of an individual .Obese children may show accelerated skeletal maturation despite the relation is not fully established. Thus it is necessary to assess skeletal maturity in growing obese patients to determine the best timing for any orthopedic interventions as these individuals may require earlier treatment than their peers. Methods :Thirty obese childen and adolescents were recruited together with thirty age and sex matched healthy control subjects. For all antrophemetricmeasurments , BMI were obtained.Pubertal assessment was done by Tanner stage.Total body fat contents (%) was assessed using Tanita apparatus for bioelectrical impedance analysis. Skeletal age was assessed by Greulish and Pyle method using hand wrist radiographs, and the skeletal age difference was calculated and was correlated in between normal and obese groups. Recent lipid profile was obtained from files of the patients
