Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Electronics and Communications Summary: Smartness is the main objective of the current worldand the future technologies, the internet of things (IoT) is thekey to make any system to be smart. Nowadays, most IoTapplication systems are real-time systems. Real-time operating systems (RTOS) are used for meeting the real-time requirementsfor these real-time systems, this makes the IoT applicationshave the RTOS features like reliability.There are many IoTplatforms have been created, but most of them are done forspecific applications and do not handle the real-time constrainsfor real-time systems. In this thesis, an IoT platform designand implementation is proposed for general applications and critical applications. Also,many communication protocols are used in IoT platformsas the message queue telemetry transport protocol (MQTT),but many of them do not support the multi-topic messaging. Inthis thesis a simple communication protocol is presented,it enhances the delay and the traffic needed for the multi-topicmessaging by supporting the multi-topic feature. A performanceanalysis for the proposed protocol versus MQTT ispresented
