Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) is commonly associated with impulsivity. Also impulsivity remains high during euthymic phases. Impulsivity is also a factor in the initiation and maintenance of substance use disorders (SUD). Impulsivity can predispose substance abuse or can be a result. Impulsivity appears to be relatively independent of mood state and is higher in individuals with past history of substance use. So, comparing of impulsivity of BD and tramadol dependence is needed to determine if there is any difference. Methods: Impulsivity was evaluated by the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11A), in 30 male patients with bipolar disorder in partial remission without any comorbid substance use disorder, 30 male patients with tramadol dependence in partial remission. The BIS-11A mean scores for two groups were compared. Results: There was no difference among the BD and tramadol dependence on subscale attentional and motor impulsivity measures. However, Male tramadol dependence patient group scored higher than the male BD patient group for total and non planning impulsivity scores. Conclusions: Results replicate that BD and tramadol dependence patients were similar on attention and motor impulsivity subscales but on the total score and non-planning subscale patients with tramadol dependence are more impulsive than patients with BD
