Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pathology Summary: Background: The laryngeal carcinoma is the second most common head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Among more than 24 members of the M.M.P.s family, M.M.P.-2 & M.M.P.-9 are proved to have the capacity to degrade the most important elements of extracellular matrix (E.C.M.) and basement membrane, thus contributing to the invasion and metastases of malignant tumors. The role of M.M.P.-2 & M.M.P.-9 in malignant progression of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (L.S.C.C.) has yet to be established. Material and Methods: M.M.P.-2 & M.M.P.-9 were studied in 60 L.S.C.C. patients including 25 cases of Grade II, 7 cases of Grade I , 8 cases of Grade III and twenty cases of carcinoma insitu (ten of them with microinvasion), retrieved as routinely processed paraffin blocks taken from the department of Pathology, Kasr El-Ainy Hospital. For all specimens, some clinical data were available on the computer files including age and sex of the patients, tumor site, tumor grading, tumor staging, infiltration of underlying cartilage, infiltration of resected margins and lymph node metastasis. Results: 35 cases (57.5 %) were considered M.M.P.-2 expressors and 36 cases (42.5 %) were considered M.M.P.-9 expressors.A significant relation was detected between M.M.P.-2 & M.M.P.-9 expressions on one hand and tumor grading, tumor site, infiltration of thyroid cartilage, infiltration of resected margins, lymph node metastasis and tumor staging on other hand was proved to be significant (P value < 0.05)
